kind to the environment too.
Natural Baby
Baby skin is thinner than ours and everything applied to the skin
is rapidly absorbed into the body. It is vital that babies do not
come into contact with chemicals as some of these accumulate in
the body and can cause damage, in addition to irritating sensitive
baby skin. Newborn babies are best washed in pure water. For older
babies, choose a range of baby
shampoos and body
washes free of sulfates, preservatives and perfumes. When changing
nappies you are best using either plain water or if there is an
irritation, a wash
made from pure flower waters. Commercially available baby wipes,
even some of the green ones, still contain perfumes and preservatives.
To prevent or treat nappy rashes, look for a natural
bottom butter made of shea butter, cocoa butter and vegetable
oils such as jojoba, olive, almond and calendula. For mild eczema
and patches of irritated skin try a care
jelly made of shea butter, olive & calendula or virgin
shea butter with jojoba, calendula & chamomile. Babies love
massage because it is very relaxing and they enjoyed being touched.
But baby massage also keeps their skin soft & glowy. If you
don't like the idea of using olive oil because it is too heavy or
because of its distinctive smell, you can try an Unscented
baby oil with coconut & jojoba oil . This baby oil can be
used for massage and a general body moisturiser, as well as treating
cradle cap. For cradle cap you can also try pure
virgin coconut oil. Coconut oil is also excellent for moisturising
flaky skin on the face or body.
Natural Mum
Mums to be need to be careful regarding the skin care products
they are using as some ingredients can cause harm to their unborn
baby. Chemical free products are best, but to be safest even products
with essential oils should be avoided, especially in the early months.
Pure
unscented oils can be used as both face and body moisturisers
and in the shower - unscented
shower gel or unscented
soap. Most mums worry about their expanding belly and the sometimes
unavoidable stretchmarks. From experience the best way to prevent
stretchmarks are eating a healthy and balanced diet, avoiding putting
too much weight too quickly and keeping the skin moist and supple.
Most natural oils are suitable for this purpose however, virgin
cocoa butter is one of the most effective moisturisers as it
is one of naturally richest source of vitamin E.
